2. What type of plastic is my SNAPWARE® container?

3. Are polycarbonate food storage containers safe?
Snapware is committed to providing its customers with safe, high quality and innovative food storage containers. The plastics Snapware uses to produce its containers are primarily polypropylene and PET. Additionally, less than 5% of Snapware’s products are made from polycarbonate. This plastic is only used to produce the containers in the Snap ‘N Serve® product line.

Recently there has been a debate over the safety of bisphenol-A (BPA), which is a component of polycarbonate. The focus has been on the hypothesis that BPA leaches when the container is subjected to heating (via microwave or other methods) thereby creating a safety risk for food contact.

As a manufacturer who has made its customers’ safety a priority, Snapware is guided by the Food & Drug Administration’s 2007 position which states: “The FDA has confidence that no safety concern exists for BPA in regulated food contact materials.” The position was recently affirmed in a 2008 letter that the FDA provided to the U.S. Congress.

Polycarbonate has been authorized for use in food contact applications by government agencies worldwide and has a 50-year safety track record. During that time, polycarbonate and BPA have been extensively studied and tested for health and safety by both manufacturers and government agencies. Such tests have repeatedly demonstrated that consumer exposure to BPA poses only a negligible risk to human health.
